How to talk to your neighbor

We’re halfway through the summer. The sun relentlessly torments the earth for days. The same dog is barking at the few shadows left. That blackberry bush is rapidly growing through the fence again. The air feels as if straight from an oven. The neighbors newly installed outside light is very bright and shines into bedroom. Tempers run high.

Sometimes, living in close quarters with neighbors can lead to inconveniences. But before you let frustration simmer, consider this: a friendly chat with your neighbor might be all it takes to find a solution.

  • Speak directly to the person involved before speaking with anyone else, face-to-face if possible.
  • Pick a comfortable time and place to talk.
  • Before you meet, plan how you are going to say your concern clearly and concisely.
  • Stick to the issue, not the person. Start your sentences by saying “I…”
  • Give information about your perspective; avoid blaming or assuming the other’s feelings or motives.
  • Listen to the other person’s side of the story, and show you are listening even if you don’t agree.
  • Get all the issues on the table before suggesting a solution.
  • Brainstorm solutions cooperatively. Be specific about agreed-upon actions.
  • Follow through with your part of the agreement.

Barking dogs, broken fences, and parked cars are common snags getting in the way of enjoying a home or neighborhood. Even with the best intentions, it’s often daunting to approach a neighbor about such concerns. Fortunately, free assistance is available through Neighbour to Neighbour!
