So many mosquitos!

Bird baths, yard ponds, sprinklers, spring rain, add up fast to create a sizable amount of standing water in the city. While they might seem harmless, and even cute; standing water can actually cause a bit of a ripple effect throughout the neighborhood. Don’t worry, though! There are easy ways to address it.

One of the biggest concerns with standing water is that it becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes. These pesky insects love stagnant water to lay their eggs, and a sudden population boom can make spending time outdoors a less than pleasant experience. Not only are mosquito bites itchy and annoying, but they can also transmit diseases, so it’s best to keep their numbers in check.

Standing water can also wreak havoc on your lawn. Without proper drainage, that pretty patch of green can turn soggy and attract unwanted weeds. Plus, all that extra moisture can create the perfect environment for fungal diseases, leaving your grass looking patchy and unhealthy.

The good news is that there are simple solutions. Addressing drainage issues, creating a rain garden with water-loving plants, or even just tipping over a kiddie pool after a downpour can make a big difference. Ponds and animal watering bowls are also easily taken care off by a bit of cleaning and the right fish, or a pump to get the water moving. The CDC has some more detailed advice.

By being mindful of standing water in our own yards, we can all contribute to a happier, healthier neighborhood for everyone.
