Meet our new city councilor

Meet Linda Nishioka, our new Ward 2 city councilor. Her priorities: A vibrant, attractive, walkable downtown, responsible development, ending homelessness and improving the environment. She wants to contribute to making Salem “a city that takes care of itself, and is welcoming to all.”

She’s lived in the Willamette Valley most of her life, attending college in Portland. While at OHSU she met her husband Gary Nishioka. “After several years moving around the country while he finished his dental and medical training, we settled in Salem in 1998” Linda mentions.

She has volunteered at her son’s schools, on environment projects including serving on the Straub Environmental Learning Center’s Board. She’s been involved in the city’s Riverfront Park and Streetscape Committees, Historic Preservation Planning Committee, Downtown Advisory Board and served on the Salem Main Street Association Board.

From Linda Nishioka

I became active in the community almost immediately after arriving here – first as a volunteer at my son’s schools, and then in environmental projects, including serving on the board of the Straub Environmental Learning Center.

In recent years I have become involved in a variety of efforts focused on making downtown Salem a more sustainable and vibrant community, serving on the City of Salem’s Riverfront Park and Streetscape committees, the Historic Preservation Planning Committee, and the Downtown Advisory Board, and serving on the board of the Salem Main Street Association.

Now that I have retired, after 22 years at Willamette Ear, Nose,Throat & Facial Plastic Surgery, I am ready to help Salem tackle the challenges ahead.
